Associated Faculty
Some visiting scholars teach special topics courses or enjoy short-term residencies at the School. Others
associated with the Jepson faculty are adjuncts who regularly teach the classes most terms. Among those
affiliated with the School are:
Mark McGarvie earned his J.D. from Marquette
University and his Ph.D. from the University of Indiana.
He practiced corporate and labor law for a decade in the
Chicago area, before returning to the historical fold.
A specialist in early American history, he has published
One Nation Under Law: America's Early National
Struggles to Separate Church and State, co-edited a
book about the history of American philanthropy, and is
working on an intellectual biography of Revolutionary
era legal thinker, St. George Tucker. He teaches in the
history department as well as in the School of
Leadership Studies and also coordinates law programs.
Charles M. Metzgar has deep practical as well as theoretical knowledge of corporate life, consulting,
corporate governance and human resources management and leadership. Retired in 2000 from William M. Mercer--the
world's largest human resources consulting firm--Professor Metzgar consults on special projects to the Mercer
chairman and the United States Leadership Group. In the spring semester, Metzgar teaches Leadership in Organizations.
Thomas Shields holds a Ph.D. in public policy from Virginia
Commonwealth University. He pursues interests in urban politics and policy, African American political involvement in
southern suburbs, and minorities in the American political system, state and local government. Dr. Shields teaches
Foundations of Leadership Studies.
