Alumni Update 2008

Class of 1994

Amy Dellamora Amick, as a vice president of Cerner Corporation in the Healthcare IT sector, leads a team of 350 consultants across 13 states. In her spare time, she volunteers at an organization that provides services and shelter for victims of domestic violence as well as with Reach Out and Read, which promotes reading for underprivileged youth. Kristen Netsel Benes is an orthodontist who practices in Arizona. After studying dentistry at MCV/VCU, she completed her ortho residency at the University of Oklahoma. She’s volunteered in Jamaica at a dental clinic and is a delegate to the Arizona Dental Association. Kristen organizes her practice so she has three-day weekends with her daughter. (Jan. 08)

Matthew G. Stevens is the senior director of Enterprise Learning at the Capital One University at Capital One in Richmond. He leads curriculum development and management for custom learning tracks for colleges of finance, credit management, procurement, brand, process engineering and compliance. Matthew volunteers as a Cub Scout leader and serves on the Jepson Alumni Networking Committee. He received his MBA from The Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond in in 2000. Class of 1996

Elizabeth Crowe Ream is grants director at University Instructors, Inc. She has worked in management and resource development to fund nonprofit organizations for the past decade. She has established statewide partnerships, won major grants and led all facets of fundraising, including legislative initiatives. She and her husband, Brandon, have two daughters, Maren Victoria and Charlotte. Elizabeth received a master’s degree in public administration from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Government and Public Affairs. She is a member of the Jepson Alumni Networking Committee. (Jan. 08)

Class of 1997

Dr. Camille Cade Hammond is one of the founders of the Tinina Q. Cade Foundation, Inc., a national non-profit organization committed to informing communities about infertility and related issues as well as adoption. In an effort to give everyone a chance to start a family the foundation provides information, outreach and financial support to families struggling with infertility issues. Medical treatment for infertility can cost upwards of $50,000, and the foundation raises funds through walk-a-thons, corporate sponsorships, silent auctions and grant applications. For more information visit www.CadeFoundation.org or email info@cadefoundation.org  In addition to her foundation work Camille is the program director of the Patient Survivorship Health Disparities program in the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland. Camille was on campus in February, 2008, as one of the alumni participants in the Real World program. (Feb. 08)

Stefanie R. Mathew is the director of development at the Foundation for the National Archives in Washington, DC. She manages the private fundraising efforts for the archives' exhibitions and education programs, including the award-winning Public Vaults exhibition and the recently-opened Boeing Learning Center. In this capacity, Stefanie also serves as a member of the team planning "Discovering the Civil War," a major traveling exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War which will launch in fall 2009. Stefanie enjoys photography and being involved in political campaigns. She is a member of the Jepson Alumni Networking Committee. (Jan. 08)

Karen McDonnell teaches at Cool Spring Elementary School in Hanover County, Va. She serves as a liaison to the school board office and has, for the past five years been nominated for the CSES Teacher of the Year Award. She earned a master’s degree in teaching from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2000. (Jan. 08)

Christine M. Morris is the Senior Manager of Operations for Gap Inc. in San Bruno, Calif.  It is one of the world’s largest specialty retailers in the apparel industry.  Christine lives in San Francisco.  (Jan. 08)

Class of 1998

Adrienne D. Capps recently moved from New York City to the West Coast, where she is senior director of development at the University of California-Davis Graduate School of Management. Previously, she was director of development for the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences at Pace University in New York. Adrienne expects to receive a master’s degree in business administration this May. (Jan. 08)

Kelly Clark Miller is a stay-at-home mother to twin girls.

Patrick Oliver graduated from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is in Bethlehem, Penn. completing his residency in emergency medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital.  (Jan. 08)

Stacie Vernick Perdue is a licensed psychologist at the Associates in Psychological Care/Watchung Psychological Associates in Morristown and Warren, New Jersey. Stacie provides individual, couples, and family therapy to adults, adolescents and children in a group practice setting. She received her master’s degree in counseling and human systems in 1999 and her doctorate in counseling psychology and school psychology from Florida State University in 2003. (Jan. 08)

Class of 1999

Reverend Father Daniel Beeman was ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest in 2007 and lives and works in Norfolk, Va. As a priest he is directly involved with faith-based advocacy on the state and national level. Daniel works significantly with the underprivileged, family and marital counseling, family planning, and youth leadership development. He ministers full-time and works for two parishes in a pilot program for the Diocese of Richmond to link parishes and share resources. (Jan. 08)

Greg G. Efthimiou is completing a research project on crisis communications and Jet Blue as part of his master’s program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Greg expects to receive a master’s degree in communication, with a focus in public relations and corporate communications in May 2008. As part of his master’s studies, Greg completed an internship with the communications firm Rowland, in Brisbane, Australia, during summer of 2007. He also serves as a volunteer program leader at Capernaum Partnership in Arlington, Va. and Chapel Hill, N.C. Previously, Greg was with Accenture, where he was a manager in the change management consulting practice. (Jan. 08)

Elizabeth Baun Hensel is a stay at home mother of twins in Sewickley, Penn.  She formerly served as a property manager with Tierra Realty Management, Inc. where she managed the day-to-day operations of 16 commercial office buildings. Elizabeth consults part-time for the government. (Jan. 08)

Theresa M. Higgs is the director of International Programs for United Planet, an international non-profit organization based in Boston. She works to enhance quality and scope of volunteer and cross-cultural programs in 50 countries. Theresa manages a team of six people who coordinate the volunteer experience, conduct site visits in various countries to assess programs and train volunteers, develop and conduct pre-departure and re-entry training for international volunteers, and collaborate with marketing and development teams to promote and enhance all programs. She received her master’s degree in intercultural relations from Lesley University in Cambridge in 2006.

Samuel J. Kaufman is taking on a number of leadership roles. He is a partner of a boutique law firm in Richmond that he started in 2007 with two other people. He is also the chairman of the Chesterfield County Chamber of Commerce and the vice-president, in charge of finance, for the University of Richmond Alumni Association. He also serves as a member of the Jepson Alumni Networking Committee. Sam has served as a volunteer at the Richmond Relief Shelter and the Virginia Poverty Law Center. He is also an attorney advisor to Midlothian High School for the Virginia Bar Association’s Model Judicial Program. (Jan. 08)

Alison Kulach is in equity sales at Bradesco BBI in New York. She is responsible for Brazilian equity sales to institutional investors, and she manages accounts in the United States, Argentina and Asia. Alison is a member of the Jepson Alumni Networking Committee.

Hillorie Leaman left a career as a national sales trainer for Forest Pharmaceuticals to attend Villanova University’s School of Law, from which she is expected to graduate in May. While in law school, Hillorie has served as a staff writer and executive editor of the Villanova Environmental Law Journal and served as a teaching assistant for Legal Writing and Analysis. She also volunteers as a mentor for new students and serves as an ambassador for prospective Villanova students. (Jan. 08)

Jennifer Campbell McIntosh teaches 8th grade history at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond. She and her husband, Andrew, a self-employed personal trainer and coach for the Richmond Kickers, also own and run McIntosh Travel, an online travel agency. In her spare time, Jennifer coaches soccer and plays an active role as a Delta Gamma. (Jan. 08)

Class of 2000

Joni Lindenstruth is a communications consultant in the marketing/communications department at T. Rowe Price in the San Francisco Bay area. She is responsible for developing the educational materials for her clients’ 401k and retirement plans. Joni volunteers at a local children’s hospital and is active in the San Francisco Bay Area University of Richmond Alumni Chapter. (Jan. 08)

Class of 2001

Charles Caldroney serves as a consultant on the Human Capital & Strategic Change team at BearingPoint (formerly KPMG Consulting). He’s traveling a great deal, mostly to the West Coast from his Richmond base. Charles is a member of the Jepson Alumni Networking Committee. (Jan. 08)

Emily Griffey is the director of research and advocacy at the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s Success by 6. In that role, she initiated and developed community-wide indicators and performance measures for coalitions and initiatives conducted by Success by 6 to promote school readiness. She has developed and implemented policy agenda to promote early childhood education initiatives and has presented data and research on early childhood issues to business leaders, state officials and community partners. She has also served as co-chair of the Early Childhood Development Coalition, a grassroots coalition of providers and advocates for early childhood issues. Emily received her master’s degree in public policy from the Johns Hopkins University Institute for Policy Studies in 2005 and is a member of the Jepson Alumni Networking Committee. (Jan. 08)

Elizabeth Woodhull Kraft owns and runs a real estate brokerage firm and an internet-based marketing program that serves real estate agents in North Carolina. Prior to launching her businesses, Elizabeth was a student financial counselor with Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina. She serves as a Guardian ad Litem volunteer for Buncombe County and the State of North Carolina, representing abused and/or neglected children in the court system. (Jan. 08)

Class of 2002

Aaron Graham is a national field organizer/justice revivals coordinator for Sojourners, a Washington, DC-based organization. Sojourners’ mission is to articulate the biblical call to social justice, inspiring hope and building a movement to transform individuals, communities, the church, and the world. Aaron, along with his wife Amy, recently appeared in a four-part series in the Boston Globe for their work in starting The Quincy Street Missionary Church in that city’s Dorchester neighborhood. Read the article. He also recently completed his master’s degree in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. (Jan. 08)

Katherine Kinsman
is a senior development officer in the New York office of The Posse Foundation, Inc. The Posse Foundation is one of the most comprehensive college access and retention programs in the country. In her role as a senior development officer, Kate manages major events, meets with donors, trains staff and works on proposals with the national director of development and the president of Posse. She is also pursuing a master’s degree at New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service. Kate is a member of the Jepson Alumni Networking Committee. (Jan. 08)

Kate Materna is a concept development manager with Circuit City Stores, Inc. in Richmond. Driving cultural change and innovation, she focuses on enabling partner development through technology in The City, a new store concept for the company.  Kate previously worked as an assistant director of admission at the University of Richmond and Lehigh University.  She completed a master's degree in educational leadership at Lehigh in 2004. Jennifer Roberts is the director of annual giving at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia. She provides the part-time director of development with senior-level support in running comprehensive fundraising operations and executes yearly and multi-year strategies to increase amounts and numbers of gifts. She also manages all day-to-day business operations, meets annual fundraising goals, and assists with major gifts programs and related social functions. Jennifer received her master’s degree of public administration in public and nonprofit management in 2006.  (Jan. 08)

Class of 2003

Evan Baum is pursuing a master’s degree in organizational development and knowledge management at George Mason University, where he works as director of undergraduate academic programs for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Evan earned his first master’s degree in education policy and leadership at the University of Maryland in 2005. Evan also recently joined the statewide university advisory board for The Phoenix Project, a nonprofit group dedicated to training Virginia’s next generation of social entrepreneurs. Evan and his wife, Beth. were married in 2007. (Pictured, at right.)  (Jan. 08)

Kelly Decker is a commercial underwriter for Philadelphia Insurance Companies in Bala Cynwyd, Penn. (Jan. 08)

Allyson Ladley is an education outreach coordinator with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis, Md. Allyson develops content and opportunities for student leaders via the Student Action Network, forms partnership with external groups and speaks at events and, in general, serves as a link between the education and communications departments. She also teaches leadership to middle and high school students all within the environmental/outdoor classroom. (Jan. 08)

Nicholas Morales is enrolled at Harvard Law School and expects to graduate in 2010. Prior to his enrollment, he served as a paralegal in Lavallette, NJ where he conducted legal research for an environmental and land use single-attorney practice that represented non-profit environmental groups, township planning boards and private clients. (Jan. 08)

Kathryn Haller Schofield is a senior associate at GMMB, a strategic communications firm that specializes in integrated public awareness campaigns for social issues. She is a member of the Junior League of Washington and is a special programs committee co-chair for the Northern Virginia Tri Delta Alumnae Association, through which she volunteers with various children’s hospital-related associations. Thomas A. Walsh serves as a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force as a weapons systems officer. Upon graduation, Thomas entered the Air Force’s Officer Training School and received an appointment to navigator training in Pensacola, Fla. After receiving his wings, he received further training in electronic warfare. He is a member of the 9th Bomb Squadron and deployed to the Middle East in July. (Jan. 08)

Jeremiah Winters works in Richmond as a financial advisor at Wachovia Securities, LLC. Jeremiah manages more than $100 million in client assets and provides multi-generational investment planning with emphasis on accumulation and distribution strategies. He is also an active volunteer in and around the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond. In addition to tutoring at risk students Jonathan played an instrumental role in the 2007 start up of The Church Hill Academy, a private school whose mission is to train and equip the young men and women of that area with the skills necessary for becoming responsible, virtuous, and articulate citizens. Joshua Walker is pursuing a doctorate degree in politics and public policy at Princeton University after having completed his master’s degree in international relations from Yale in 2006. He is a researcher and policy analyst with extensive international experiences within academia, government service, think-tanks and the private sector. Joshua and his wife, Chauntee Schuler, live in New York City. In 2006 the couple were runners-up in a wedding contest on The Today Show. Chauntee, an accomplished actress, can be seen on television playing the role of attorney Bonnie McKechnie on CBS’ As The World Turns. (Jan. 08)

Jonathan C. Zur, vice president of program operations at the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities in Richmond, is a member of the Leadership Metro Richmond class of 2008. He is the first Jepson graduate to be accepted for the exclusive community leadership development program. (Jan. 08)   

Class of 2004

Colette Connor is wrapping up law school at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. where she is also a clinical student in the Supreme Court and Appellate Practice Workshop. She is a Chayes International Public Service Fellow, managing editor of the Harvard International Law Journal, and is active in Harvard Law School Advocates for Human Rights. (Jan. 08)

Neil Singh lives in New York City, where he is a project manager for Fine Construction Specialties in Lynbrook. Neil manages a team of 30 commercial and industrial painters and is involved in the bidding and estimation of all projects. He is the contact person for the local Union officials and also initiated industrial painting operations in Oregon and Washington. (Jan. 08)

Class of 2005

Jillian Fasching is the manager of Advocacy and Public Policy for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, National Capital Chapter. Jill was on campus in February, 2008, as one of the alumni participants in the Real World program.  (Feb. 08)

 

Richard W. Gouldin, III is in his third year teaching third grade in the Louisa County Public School System in Virginia. He also serves as a tutor and as a faculty mentor in the After School Mentor Program. He is the acting chair of the school’s Building Leadership Team, a group that works with multiple groups to promote staff unity and help build a positive school environment. Richard is a candidate for a master’s degree at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. (Jan. 08)    

 

Matthew Pennella is a project manager at Hudson Highland Properties, LLC in Hoboken, N.J. In that role, Matthew supports the managing partners with all day-to-day activities including meeting with investors, lenders and brokers. He manages the internal staff, develops strategy and writes business plans for new ventures. (Jan. 08)

Alison M. Smith received a master’s in political science in 2007 from Boston College where she was awarded the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Fellowship and the H.B. Earhard Fellowship. Now in the PhD program with a concentration in American politics, she works as a policy specialist for The Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, Inc. Under the auspices of The Manhattan Institute’s Center for the American University (CAU), Alison works with university professors to seed new centers of academic excellence under the VERITAS Fund for Higher Education Reform. Alison is also a political consultant at Revere Advisors LLC, a boutique firm in New York. Alison teaches dance and volunteers at The Children’s Institute in New Jersey, a school for children with autism. (Jan. 08)  

Class of 2006

Meredith Clarke works in project support at Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbot, an architectural and design firm in Boston. She is working on a master’s degree in interior design at Boston Architectural College. (Jan. 08)

Whitney McComis will finish her two-year commitment to Teach for America in May. Whitney has spent the last two years teaching writing to 7th graders at Fonville Middle School in Houston. She plans to pursue her master’s degree in education at night while working full-time as a teacher during the day. (Jan. 08)

T.R. Straub is completing his second year as a Teach For America corps member in Baltimore, where he has taught 9th grade U.S. History, 10th grade U.S. Government, and 11th & 12th grade World History courses. Additionally, at his school, he is the co-chair of his School Improvement Team and the advisor of the Student Government Association. Last summer, he assisted with the training of incoming corps members as a School Operations Manager at the TFA Philadelphia Institute. This year he is a recruitment director for Teach For America, working with undergraduate campuses in the Baltimore-Philadelphia corridor. (Jan. 08)

Class of 2007

Katherine Connelly is a program center manager establishing a Phonathon at Providence College in Rhode Island. (Jan. 08)

Mark Hickman is a paralegal at Hunton & Williams LLP in Richmond. He is a member of the Richmond Paralegal Association and is also a Notary Public. Mark is a member of the Jepson Alumni Advisory Committee and the UR Young Grad Council, where he sits on the Professional and Personal Development Committee. (Jan. 08)  

Corrine Nunez is an analyst at Analytics Corporation in Richmond. She performs chemical and biological examinations of water samples according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. (Jan. 08)  

David Roberts is studying law at the University of  Virginia. (Jan. 08)

Stefanie Simon is in a fellowship at the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. She is studying prejudice. She expects to become a social psychologist. She returned to campus in December, 2007, to  visit with Jepson assistant professor Crystal Hoyt and attend the Jepson Leadership Forum featuring renowned social psychologist and gender research pioneer Alice Eagly. Tara Sulzen is living in Portland and is working as a political organizer with the Oregon Bus Project. After completing her summer PolitiCorps fellowship, a selective leadership development and public affairs intensive training for college students and recent graduates, Tara was asked to stay with the Bus Project to help build fundraising capacity and plan major events for the organization. She recently worked to plan the curriculum and event logistics for the Rebooting Democracy Conference, to engage young people in political volunteerism and social movements in Oregon in 2008.
